2010 Beneficiary Announced!
The TriAdventure Steering Committee, after much discussion and debate, is very proud to announce that this year's beneficiary is Nikibasika of the Canada Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA). Nikibasika, a home for orphaned and vulnerable children, will receive 90% of all funds raised and the remaining 10% will be directed to CACHA to assist it with other projects it supports
in Africa.
This is a new direction for the TriAdventure since it will be the first year that the Stephen Lewis Foundation will not be a beneficiary. The TriAdventure remains fully committed to the incredibly important work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) and its staff which support over 300 grassroots projects in Africa. The TriAdventure and SLF were both in their infancy when we joined forces six years ago and we've enjoyed a wonderfully productive and supportive relationship which we intend to maintain. But there are several reasons why we chose Nikibasika and CACHA for 2010:
When the TriAdventure was created in 2004, it was never intended to support only one charity. It was envisioned as potentially supporting different charities in Africa over the years and that its beneficiaries might change from year to year. For its first three years, 100% of all funds raised were directed to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. In the past two years, participants had the option of directing funds to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the Nikibasika Orphanage Project, or both.
In 2010, we've decided to direct our funds to the Nikibasika Orphanage Project, a project of CACHA. Our primary reason is that the orphanage struggles to stay afloat from month-to-month. Its Board often holds emergency meetings to try and find immediate funds to keep its 51 children fed and housed. A one-year injection of $90,000 from the TriAdventure would allow the orphanage to stabilize its operations for at least a year, allowing its Board to shift from fundraising each month to enhancing the care and program development for the children.
Many former TriAdventure participants have described an incredibly close connection to the orphanage and a strong desire for it to be the primary beneficiary of the TriAdventure, given their need for help and the rapport we've developed with them.
Finally, the burden of splitting fundraising dollars from donors, recording the split funds, responding to inquiries about the different beneficiaries, and ensuring appropriate tax receipts were issued by the two beneficiaries became an administrative challenge. Having a single beneficiary significantly improves administration for our volunteer-run
Steering Committee.
We realize that the SLF is also in need of funding for the outstanding work it does and we have no doubt that many projects have pressing needs similar to that of Nikibasika. But we are hopeful and confident that the SLF, given its phenomenal success, will be able to find other sources to recoup the modest funds it would have otherwise received from the TriAdventure.
Look out for further information about the Nikibasika Orphanage, the children it supports, and their stories of hope and possibilities in upcoming issues of
the Tribune.
