Why AIDS in Africa?1
Of the 33.2 million people on Earth with HIV/AIDS, sub-Saharan Africa remains the most affected region. Some 22.5 million people are living with HIV in that region alone – or 68% of all people infected with HIV on Earth.- Unlike other regions of the world, the majority of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are women (61%).
- 11.4 million children have been orphaned by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa alone.
The impetus to support orphaned children is critical. Without primary caregivers, food, and money to pay for school fees, AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa are a looming threat to future generations.
