Event Description
The Challenge
On August 15, 2008, a team of 40 courageous athletes will embark on the 4th Annual Tri-Adventure. This challenging, fun three-day triathlon helps to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa at the grassroots level through our grateful beneficiary, the Stephen Lewis Foundation. At each leg of the journey, participants are fully supported with food, drink, safety personnel and equipment. All you need is a bike, a bathing suit and the desire to make a significant contribution.
Only 40 participants can register so say 'YES' to this extraordinary experience.
What's Involved
There are three Tri-Adventure events:

More Encouragement to Tri?
A good place to start, especially if you feel daunted by the challenges of this event (fundraising and physical aspects)
please read Robert Goderre's or Chris Williamson's
stories (from The Tri-Adventure 2005). A detailed description of each day of this year's Tri-Adventure
is provided below.
We also encourage you to watch the visual presentations below. They are sure to inspire you join our
team.
Finally, we provide a comprehensive set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for your review.
You may also contact us directly if you need further help in making your decision.
You can ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa by Tri-ing
All participants are asked to raise a
minimum of $1,000 in pledges. For the third year in a row the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) is the beneficiary.
The SLF supports projects that provide care at the community level to women who are dying from
AIDS-related illnesses and that help orphans and other AIDS-affected children and supports associations
of people living with HIV/AIDS in Africa. For more information about the projects the SLF
supports, please visit the
SLF Projects page .
While the Stephen Lewis Foundation is the grateful beneficiary of the funds raised through
Tri-Adventure, it is not involved in the organization of this event.
Tri-Adventure Day by Day
Friday, August 17th
We head north by bus to Camp Wahanowin on the shore of
Lake Couchiching (east of Orillia, just north of Casino Rama). The bus leaves downtown Toronto at
noon, and a light lunch is served. We arrive at Camp Wahanowin at around 2:00 PM.
The swim takes place in the afternoon or evening, depending on weather and lake conditions.
A course is laid out parallel to the shore, starting at the Camp Wahanowin dock. The swim
involves four legs: you swim 750 metres to a buoy, then back to the starting point, then repeat.
Throughout the TriAd, safety is paramount, and rest points are available along the course. Completing the
three kilometres should take under two hours.
After we have eaten dinner in the Camp Wahanowin mess hall, there are casual social activities.
Accommodation is in the Camp's cabins.
Saturday, August 18th
After an early breakfast, we meet on the Camp beach and select partners for the canoeing event.
We jump into canoes, head south on Lake Couchiching and meet at 'The Narrows' for the final
leg on Lake Simcoe. The entire route is approximately 15 kilometres, landing at
McRae Point Provincial Park.
After lunch, we cycle 23 kilometres to the evening campground at
Point of Mara Park.
Some participants bring their own tents, others share. The swimming
is excellent, and special evening activities follow a wonderful meal.
Sunday, August 19th
After breakfast, we continue to cycle down the east side of
Lake Simcoe and over the rolling hills to Toronto (approximately 120 more kilometres). This
takes five to seven hours (plus rest periods).
We arrive in Toronto for a group celebration
with friends and family. We have a lovely BBQ and
present a cheque to the Stephen
Lewis Foundation. In 2006 we had the honour of Stephen Lewis welcoming us in the same week as he played
a critical role at the 16th International AIDS Conference in Toronto.
